The whole point of a forge lining is to keep heat inside the chamber instead of soaking it into the walls. Ceramic fiber and soft firebrick are insulators: low density, low thermal mass, so they reach temperature fast and reflect heat back at your steel. Hard, dense brick is a heat sink - it drinks energy for 20-30 minutes before the surface even glows, and it keeps pulling heat the entire time you forge.

That difference shows up directly on your propane bill and in how hot the forge will run. A well-insulated chamber can reach forging and even forge-welding temperatures on one 3/4 in burner. Line that same forge in dense red brick and the same burner may never get to bright yellow. The modern combination that works

Most successful beginner forges use each material where it is strongest:

  • Ceramic fiber (kaowool) for walls and ceiling. Two 1 in layers (2 in total) of 8 lb/ft^3 blanket, rigidized and hard-coated. This is your primary insulation.
  • Soft insulating firebrick for the floor. It survives dropped stock better than bare fiber and still insulates well. It is also easy to carve a channel or set a pass-through for longer stock.
  • Hard firebrick or a kiln shelf in the flux zone. Where you forge-weld, molten borax eats fiber, coatings, and soft brick. A dense fireclay brick or a cordierite kiln shelf takes the abuse and can be swapped out cheaply.

Rigidizer stiffens the fluffy blanket so it holds its shape and sheds fewer fibers, and a hard refractory coat (a castable, Plistix, or an ITC-100 style product) gives you a durable, reflective, flux-resistant surface. Pitfalls to avoid

  • Dense red brick or patio/landscaping brick. The classic beginner mistake. Cheap and everywhere, but they are heat sinks, not insulators - you will burn extra fuel and struggle to reach heat. Save them for a forge table or shop shelving, not the chamber.
  • Bare, uncoated fiber. It insulates beautifully but sheds particles you should not breathe. Always rigidize and hard-coat.

For the walls and ceiling of a gas forge, yes - ceramic fiber blanket insulates far better than firebrick and heats up in minutes. But it is fragile and must be rigidized and coated. Soft insulating firebrick still earns a place as the floor, and hard firebrick beats both for flux resistance. The best builds combine all three rather than picking one.

Do I have to rigidize and coat ceramic fiber?

Yes. Bare blanket sheds fibers you should not breathe, and the raw surface erodes and reflects heat poorly. Can I use regular red brick to line a forge?

Is ceramic fiber dangerous?

A properly sealed lining is safe to run; loose, bare blanket is what you must protect against.
