How to line a propane forge

How much kaowool do I need to line a forge?

Do I have to rigidize and coat ceramic fiber?
Yes. Bare ceramic fiber sheds tiny fibers that are hazardous to breathe, and it erodes quickly under the flame. Rigidizer hardens the surface and locks fibers down; a hard hot-face and reflective coating protect the fiber and reflect heat at your work. Never run a forge with a bare, uncoated fiber lining.
Kaowool or firebrick for a forge?
Most modern gas forges use ceramic fiber blanket for the walls because it insulates far better and heats up fast, with soft insulating firebrick used for the floor and door. Hard, dense red brick is a poor forge insulator and wastes fuel. Many beginners use a hard-brick or kiln-shelf floor only where forge-welding flux would eat the softer materials.
Is 1 inch or 2 inches of insulation better?
Two inches holds heat better, reaches temperature with less propane, and keeps the shell cooler, so it is the usual recommendation.
