Watch the colour, not the clock. Below the low end steel moves poorly; past the high end it burns.

Tempering colours appear on clean, polished steel. They are a rough guide - an oven at a set temperature is more repeatable.

The three steps: normalize, harden, temper

Heat treating a simple carbon-steel blade is three heats. Normalize first (heat to non-magnetic, cool in still air, a few times) to relieve forging stress and refine the grain. Harden by heating to the austenitizing temperature - just past non-magnetic - soaking briefly, then quenching in the right medium. Temper immediately, twice, in a kitchen oven to trade a little hardness for toughness so the edge does not shatter.

Match the quench to the steel: oil for 1084/5160/O1, a fast oil for 1095, water or brine for W2. Guessing the quench is the top reason beginner blades crack or stay soft. Check each steel's forging heat on the forging temperature chart and compare grades in the knife steel comparison.

What temperature do you harden 1084 at?

Heat 1084 to about 1,500°F - just past the point where it stops sticking to a magnet (non-magnetic, around 1,414°F) plus a shade more - soak for a minute or so, then quench in warm fast oil. Temper twice at around 400°F for a hard but tough knife edge near 60 HRC. 1084 is forgiving, which is why it is the classic first knife steel.

Oil or water quench?

It depends on the steel. Oil-quench 1084, 5160 and O1; use a fast oil for 1095; water or brine only for water-hardening steels like W2. Quenching an oil steel in water almost guarantees cracks. When unsure, warm oil is the safer choice - this tool shows the right medium for each grade.

Do I really need to temper?

Yes, always, and soon. Straight out of the quench a blade is glass-hard and brittle - it can chip or snap. Tempering in a 375-450°F oven (twice, an hour each, within an hour of quenching) trades a little hardness for the toughness that keeps an edge in one piece. Never skip it.

How do I harden steel without a kiln?

You can harden simple carbon steels in a propane forge by eye: heat evenly to non-magnetic plus a little, watching colour in dim light, then quench. It is less precise than a kiln but works well for 1084 and 5160. Temper in a household oven, which holds temperature far better than a forge.
