The 50x rule (and why it exists)

A common guideline is that your anvil should weigh at least 40-50 times your hammer. The reason is physics: when you strike hot steel, you want the blow to move the metal, not the anvil. A heavy anvil sits still and returns energy into the workpiece; a light one flexes, rings, walks across the shop and wastes your effort.

For a 2 lb hammer that puts you around 90-110 lb for general work. You can start lighter - plenty of people learn on a 66 lb anvil - but the heavier you can afford and mount solidly, the better it forges. A well-mounted lighter anvil beats a heavier one bouncing on a flimsy stand, so mount it properly.

How heavy should my first anvil be?

For general blacksmithing with a 2-2.5 lb hammer, aim for 90-140 lb if you can. A 66 lb anvil is a fine, affordable starting point and many smiths learn on one - just mount it solidly. The key rule is at least 40-50 times your hammer weight.

Can I learn on a 55 or 66 lb anvil?

Yes. Lighter anvils move more and ring louder, but they absolutely work for learning and for knives and small projects. Bolt or strap it down to a heavy stump or stand to calm the bounce and quiet the ring. You can always upgrade later.

Is a bigger anvil always better?

Heavier is generally better for forging because it returns more energy, but only up to what you can afford, move and mount. A 260 lb anvil is wonderful and completely unnecessary for a beginner. Match the weight to your hammer and your projects, not to bragging rights.

Does anvil shape matter as much as weight?

Weight and a hard face come first; shape is secondary for a beginner. A London-pattern anvil with a horn and hardy hole is the most versatile, but a simple heavy block of hardened steel forges beautifully. Get the mass and the rebound right, then worry about the horn.
